Do You Believe in Your Own E-Myth?

Not everyone is cut out for running a business.  The sad fact remains that there are many start-ups and small firms which fail just as soon as they begin.  But why is this?  Surely people set up businesses because they have something to offer people, and because they are the best at what they do?  Sadly, this isn’t always the case.

In fact, this is what Michael Gerber refers to in his groundbreaking book, The E-Myth.  The E-Myth in question relates to the belief that all people who start businesses are well-equipped to do so.  This, more often than not, isn’t the case.

Are You Affected by the E-Myth?

Whether or not you are in tune with process management, there is still a danger that you could be part of the E-Myth problem.  Gerber’s E-Myth principles revolve around building a business that works for you, and not the other way around.  You know full well if you are affected by the E-Myth if you find yourself having to play catch-up with basic business processes.  If you are struggling to maintain solid results week after week, year after year, it’s time to start thinking a little differently.

But how can you avoid falling into that E-Myth trap?  Can you break free of the 5-year challenge that all small businesses face?  Yes – but only if you’re willing to embrace a few changes.

Make Your Business Work for You

The whole point of business systemisation, ultimately, is to create a business framework that you can fall back on.  By the second or third year in business, if not earlier, you shouldn’t have to be attending to every facet of your firm.  You should, ideally, have processes in place and people ready to deliver fantastic results time and time again.

However, in practice, that’s not so easy.  That’s what makes Gerber’s book such a fascinating read.  It is a genuine insight into what businesses should be doing for us, in time, and not the other way round.  Ultimately, Gerber has inspired us to help design SOPs and systems to help people from falling into that E-Myth trap.

Finding the right systems to work for you will take time and reflection.  It is not something you can take short cuts with.  However, once systems are in place, you can start to automate processes and grow your brand with confidence.  It is all about freeing up crucial time to be able to develop your firm.
